I felt like I was in Westminster Abbey in London when I was looking around the small apse of the cathedral where we were sitting. The dark wood carved walls were the backdrop for the men and women I was drawing. The Cathedral was full. Branford Marsalis, walked out, said a few words in that wonderful voice of his and the lights dimmed. Except for applause the audience was absolutely still and quiet while they listened to the sounds of his saxophone fill the space around them.
Grace Cathedral is the third largest Gothic cathedral in the country. Besides magnificent stained glass windows, there are copies of the famous Ghiberti Gates of Paradise, priceless icons and frescoe-style murals depicting California’s colorful history. There are two Labyrinths, one inside and one outside. Keith Haring AIDS Chapel altarpiece is to the right after you enter the Cathedral. Click on images to enlarge.
Your faces are really beautiful, Carla!
Impressive, especially for sketching in the dark.

Thank you . It’s always a fun surprise to see the drawings afterwards when I see them in the light.

I agree – lovely drawings ! Perhaps I should get my university students drawing in the dark – listening to a good saxophonist wouldn’t hurt them either ! Thanks for mentioning the labyrinths which I’ve been looking at :http://pinterest.com/gracecathedral/the-labyrinth-grace-cathedral/

Having a glass of wine, listening to live jazz and drawing in the dark. That is the best! The music flows and loose drawings just come out of my hand.I love to look at the surprise afterwards when I look at what I did in the dark. I’ve draw at the opera. That is quite wonderful except I want to remember the colors. Sometimes notes on the color get scribbled in. humm an idea for a blog. It is interesting this blogging. One idea leads to another and we get so much from looking at other blogs. Yes a good assignment for your students. I like your different viewpoints on the contour drawings. I’m going to try that. The grey series I like- not easy to do.

Again, love these..I really should play more music when I’m working. I love this kind of music, and I can see how it would really work with line drawing..it would be interesting to be able to see your sketch evolving with the music playing in the background!

That would be cool. I’d like to see that too. There is an app out called draw something where you draw on your iphone then your drawing buddy watches you draw , the strokes and she or he guess what the word is. Interesting to see how the artist’s mind works.

Your drawings are amazing – I love that you did them in the dark – OMG, I can only say they are as wonderful as if you did them in full light….

I think they came out better because I wasn’t looking at the paper. If I had been I would have drawn like what my past experience thought they should look like if that makes any sense.
