Mad Men Interferes with Life of California Blogger

March 28, 2012

How am I going to get my daily post written when my husband is in the other room watching all the previous seasons of the TV show? It’s his first time watching it so he’s catching up. I hear Peggy talking in the background. Gotta run in and see what she is up to. What’s Don doing? Sterling Cooper – I wonder what words of wisdom he will be saying? How am I going to pick and upload an image when I want to see what Betty is wearing? Ahhh the music. That means the end of that episode. Was it really like that when you were an ad man on Madison Avenue in the 60′s?

Four Bhutanese Friends – US Congress

February 17, 2012

I made the little box thinking it could be a container to hold stamps I picked up in Bhutan. The images remind me of Bhutanese folk tales. (click on the image to make it bigger)

The Bhutanese folktale called Four Friends is about an elephant, a monkey, a rabbit and a bird. They all learn to help each other by living together harmoniously. I should paint my  impression of this folktale and send the finished product to Congress; a gift from an American. President Obama, The House of Representatives, the Senate, the Ameican people; It’s you I’m writing about.

RED

May 18, 2010

Alfred Molina plays Mark Rothko.  Eddie Redmayne plays his assistant. There is no intermission. The words are poetic, the acting  intense. If you were painting in the early 60′s  or interested in art around that time go see this play. It’s about Mark Rothko’s commission to paint murals for the Four Seasons Restaurant at the Seagrams building in New York. It certainly brought me back to that time. I was putting the records on while stretching and priming big canvases. The actors prime a huge canvas on stage. A good read is Lee Seldes’ book,  The Legacy of Mark Rothko. It’s the true story of his daughter and the  collectors of Rothko’s paintings, a greedy bunch they were those men from  Marlborough gallery.

Only In New York

November 17, 2009

Only in New York  would you see a scene like this, two people going by a walking painting and not even looking! The guy is carrying a huge painting that reminds me of the work of  16th century Flemish painter Pieter Bruegel the Elder. The shape of the boy being lead in one direction is echoed in the painting. The aritist has tied his pants at the ankle. Do you suppose he carried this painting on a bicycle?  If I followed the rules of a good photograph I’d probably toss this one. The car is in the way. I could clone it out in Photoshop. I’m leaving it. This is a moment captured in New York City, November 2009.
