Fog Shadow

October 18, 2009

fogshadows_MG_8208 copy

This morning the fog was very dense as it crept past my window. The fog cleared rapidly. This was followed by the sunrise. The fog was just dense enough to be illuminated by sunlight that passed  between two buildings. I ran to get my tripod, set it up and got this picture before the sun and fog moved on.

Better Photo Photography Contest Finalist – August 2009

Our assignment was to approach a stranger, compliment that person on something you noticed about him and ask if you could take his picture. Proudly showing me his arm,  still a little swollen from the new tattoo, he told me his wife had a role in designing the letters.  ”Listen to the Lion” came from a Van Morrison CD.  The song is written about a church in San Francisco, St. Dominicks.  You should have seen the other celtic tattoo.

Today Is Not My Day

August 13, 2009

My blog and my painting have been neglected.  Digital photography has taken over. I’m thinking about mac and pc monitors. Does one show my images lighter than the other?  How far do I want to go when editing my images – just sharpen them a little?  By setting my camera to continuous focus and continuous mode instead of single shot I usually get at least one shot in focus.

When I was in the paint shop waiting for some paint to be mixed this man walked in. I took a big breath, walked up to him and said, “Will you make my day? I posed him outside against this yellow wall which was in the shade. Afterwards, he asked me how many portraits did I need to take?  I said as many as it takes for my hands to stop shaking.  This month I have an assignment to go up to starangers, compliment them and ask to take their picture.

Early Morning in San Francisco

It’s the getting up at 4:30 am. That’s the hard part. But it’s worth it when you see the sun come up and bathe it’s glorious light on the view in front of you. All those nondescript buildings at the base of the monuments, so uninteresting during the day, turned into magical shapes in the early morning light.  Photography. It’s all about light.

Playground at 3am.

Playground at 3am.

On BetterPhoto.com I take a class, Masterpiece Membership with Jim Miotke. He  posts an assignment once a month. When I started this class I needed some kind of creative outlet while I was not able to go to the studio regularly. What fun this course is!  I’m hooked. The assignment for May was to  shoot a single scene or subject in as many ways as I could. The assignment read, Look for a subject or scene that has great potential and then see how many different “right answers” you can create out of that subject.” I chose a playground. Above is one of my images.

I asked if I could take his picture.

Oh no, don’t take off your mask!

The next day I brought him a print.

But he had finished his job and was gone.

Homeland Security

Homeland Security

My project was to photograph abstract, colorful close-ups of a demolition project but everyday the weather was cloudy and everything was flat grey. Running out of time I turned around and shot what I saw. Now, of course, the sun came out. Stepping over, around and through the demolition site I took pictures of the Transamerica building. The resulting pictures were much more interesting.  I tried out the AE lock and did crop and sharpen a little.
